In this episode James Bryan Smith has a Things Above Conversation with Bill Gaultiere. James and Bill discuss the importance of soul care, especially at a time when we are struggling with a global pandemic.
Bill is a Psychologist (PhD; PSY12036 in CA) and pastor/mentor to pastors. He writes and speaks to thousands of people every week through the Soul Shepherding website, blog, podcast, and Facebook page. He was personally mentored for many years by Dallas Willard and Ray Ortlund Sr. His recent book Your Best Life in Jesus’ Easy Yoke tells the story of his spiritual renewal from anxious living and burnout and introduces the message and way of Soul Shepherding.
Together Bill and his wife Kristi Gaultiere run the Soul Shepherding institute where they minister to pastors, leaders, staff teams, and their church or circle of influence. As Doctors of Psychology and Spiritual Directors, they help you to thrive with Jesus in life and leadership. Visit the Soul Shepherding website here.

HI James, so happy and thankful that you have interviewed Bill Gaultiere, on this podcast, this is very relevant as most of the people theses days are gripped with fear and anxiety, this is such a blessing and encouragement, Great job!
I appreciate so much all that Dallas Willard taught regarding the VIM method of finding a new life and making changes in our lives. It begins with a vision, then an intention which leads us to employ the means to get there.
Interesting discussion, however, it seems to me that the questions posed to Bill were not really answered. The questions were related to Dallas Willard’s quote about this world being a safe place when you are part of the Kingdom of God (a Christian) and how he would respond to someone who has been abused in relation to this concept, as well as where was God in that situation. The response was that you respond with empathy. This seems very logical to me but doesn’t really answer the question. Yes, our place in God’s Kingdom, our salvation is unshakable, but the quote talks about this world being a safe place.
Thank you for a wonderful listen. I would add that Jesus’ desires for us to “fear not’ must go hand in hand with his promises, not the least of which is promising the peace that passes understanding. There are other tools to gain this peace such as prayers with gratitude in Phil 4, forgiveness and so forth. Your conversation led to discussing the saying by DW : We live in the strong and unshakable [*] kingdom of God” and how that doesn’t ring so true if you’re a victim of violence or fill in the blank! Hello! Bill made a good point, that mostly that statement is not what you say to someone struggling with a clear and present danger, rather you provide empathy. If we could insert *PEACE OF into that saying then we would have an indisputable help to counter worries and fears. To God’s Peace! Nothing can take that away!
Loved this rich conversation! Two of the voices I trust most on one podcast. Wow! Such a gift in the midst of these challenging days! Thank you!
