In this episode James Bryan Smith has a Things Above conversation with Dave Mullins. Dave is a speaker, teacher, writer, musician and recently co-producer of the movie “Ragamuffin,” David Mullins seeks to use these gifts to take the simple, life-changing word of God’s love to both the lost and to those in the Church who believe they are unlovable, unaccepted and unworthy of His love. David is currently serving as the Lead Teaching Minister at Colonial Heights Christian Church in Kingsport, TN.
Dave’s brother Rich Mullins was a famous christian singer/songwriter who was tragically killed in a car accident in the fall of 1997. Rich had a profound impact on both Dave and James lives. Rich lived in the Smith’s attic apartment for over 3 years and blessed them with his kindness and love of Jesus. Throughout this episode, James and Dave listen to a few of their favorite songs written by Rich and talk about why they mean so much to them.
Songs in the episode:
1. “Color Green”
2. “Hold Me Jesus”
3. “Creed”

Fantastic! Good, good soul.
If Dave Mullins would sing to this culture like Rich what a blessing a rich blessing .
This culture is starving for genuine truth.
Hey David , I see Mitch Mc Vicker and you put your gifts together.
Wonderful!!! Really enjoyed this podcast!!
Thank you for listening!
Great podcast! Dave is very modest. Did you know that HE plays the hammer dulcimer? We saw him play it with the Raggamuffins at a concert in Texas in 1998, the summer after Rich died. When Dave walked out and started playing the hammer dulcimer, we did a real double-take.
Thanks for doing this together. It was great to hear you both….and also to hear Rich.
Wow that is a great story! We would love to see Dave play sometime. Thanks for listening, Jeff!
During an audience Q&A with Matt Maher who once was mentored by Rich Mullins, I asked, “If Rich Mullins was Elijah, are you Elisha?” Maher laughed, and I followed up with, “What was it like to have Rich Mullins in your life at the start of your professional music career?” I’ll never forget Maher’s answer. He said, “It was a great experience and an honor getting to know Rich Mullins and have him in my life back then . . . but the truth is that the nameless people at St. Timothy’s where I was leading worship for ten years who poured their lives into mine have done the most to disciple me in Christ.” What an amazing tribute to the grace and power of the Body of Christ, huh!
By the way, that would be a great podcast if you could interview Matt Maher and he could talk about how those nameless people at St. Tim’s helped disciple him in Christ more than did an experience with someone most of us would give almost anything to meet. Waddaya think? https://youtu.be/R377Az6RQiI
Recently, I’ve been thinking about the anniversary of Rich’s death. It will be 25 years on September 19th (1997)- 3 1/2 months away, a major turning point. I’m deeply disheartened realizing there’s only one Celebration of Life event on his birthday, October 21st, at Friends University, where Rich received his bachelor’s in music education. Unfortunately, it’s a paid in-person event, and how many people live close enough to attend? I’ve seen nothing so far about a single online event. This truly saddens me. We can’t let his beautiful life and profound legacy slip away. This current generation and beyond need Rich to lead them to our Lord. If only I could do something. The only thing I can do is post this everywhere I can, and, Lord willing, there will be a huge following to do the same. Christian artists and ministries listen up; please do something!
