James Bryan Smith has a Things Above conversation with Dr. Michael Wise. Michael Wise is an internationally recognized expert on the Dead Sea Scrolls. He frequently lectures on the Dead Sea Scrolls from coast to coast. Dr. Wise is ordained as a minister in the Evangelical Free Church and regularly teaches adult Sunday School classes. He recently completed a second Ph.D., in the field of Classics (ancient Greek and Latin literature), at the University of Minnesota.
In this episode, James asks Michael about three observations he has about the dead sea scrolls. Michael and James end the episode talking about our death to sin, and since we have been raised with Christ we are no longer held captive to sin.

Thanks for introducing Michael Wise, the paradox (!), and connecting your discussion of faith life with scripture. I, with you, appreciated the “building” of the definition of faith as you collaborated with each other. Terrific stuff.
Thank you so much for listening!
Thank you for sharing this conversation. I found the discussion of what it means to be “dead to sin” to be especially enlightening. It reminded me of the old melodrama scene, “You are dead to me! I no longer have a child!” In that melodrama sense the child still exists, but not as far as the parent is concerned. In a similar way, for Paul to say that we are dead to sin does not mean that sin no longer exists, rather “sin” no longer recognizes us! We are hidden in Christ! Sin no longer has dominion.
The converse is also helpful: Sin is not dead to us. As Dr. Wise pointed out, we can (and do) still sin, but that is now by our choice and sin has lost its power to destroy us.
Thanks again for sharing a great conversation!
Thank you! Keep setting your mind on Things Above!
This interview with Dr. Wise has been very helpful and challenging. I got to hear him speak a few years ago and look forward to learning more from him. One of the things that really sticks with me is that we are victorious in our spiritual lives because Christ lives in us. And also I am challenged by the concept that we are to set our minds on things that are above, as we are told in Romans 8.
