James Bryan Smith talks about two kinds of love, “gift love” and “need love.” In this episode Smith’s thought from above is, to love one another just as Jesus has loved us. “Need Love”, is a kind of longing love much like romantic love. “Gift Love” is God’s love, it doesn’t need anything in return. Smith helps explain each of these “loves” in more detail and closes the episode with a passage from John 13:34.

Hello James,
I have enjoyed your podcast off and on for some 6 months now.
I read the biography that you did of Rich Mullins.
I was an avid listener of Rich’s music and after his death anything I could find about his life.
Similarly I began reading the works of Dallas Willard, Richard foster and after I found out that you wrote on spiritual formation well I have been very interested and very blessed by your writings on the matter.
The matter being living an abundant life that is focused on loving God and loving my neighbor.
The most recent episode April 27 was succinct and rich in pointing us to the life that Jesus taught.
Thank you for teaching us.
I will bet that your classes are are deeply life enriching.
We couldn’t expect less of a student of Dallas.
Blessings to you and yours, Scott Cramblit
